Inspiring Movies for Aspiring Writers

Do you ever feel like “the dream” is impossibly out of reach? Or that literary success is reserved for a fortunate few?

Yeah, me too. But rather than letting frustration and self-doubt prevail, I’ve found something that pulls me out of a writing funk each and every time, guaranteed: watching a “lit flick.”

What’s a lit flick? You know, those feel-good movies about writers who follow their dreams and achieve wonderful things as a result. Trust me, nothing is better for a bruised ego or battered psyche.

My go-to favorites are:

Under the Tuscan Sun

Miss Potter

Julie and Julia

Eat, Pray, Love

I’ve seen each of these at least a dozen times and they always manage to lift my spirits and remind me that anything is possible. And let’s face it, we dream chasers need that from time to time.

What “lit flicks” inspire you?

  1. I pop in Stranger Than Fiction with Will Ferrel and Emma Thompson. I love that one. My favorite movie is Love Actually. I love Colin Firth’s author character. Plus, I love how they weaved all the stories into one larger story.

    1. Brianna,
I highly recommend all of them if you ever find yourself in a writerly funk…or even if you’re just looking for a good movie. If you watch them, be sure to let me know what you think.

  2. Eat, Pray, Love is probably one of my favorites of all time. I still have to read that book though.

I feel awful, I really can’t think of any more lit flicks. =/

    1. Ashley – Eat, Pray, Love is one of my all-time favorite books. You should definitely move it to the top of your to-read pile.

Let me know how you like it…
