Whether your personality gravitates towards optimism or pessism, we all have our moments of negativity. Luckily, there’s a simple way to curtail “negativitis”: add the word “yet” to your negative thoughts and statements. This is something I learned from a talented, inspiring Pilates instructor and it rings true for all aspects of our lives.
For example, I’ve heard many aspiring writers (okay, myself included) say, “I love to write, but I’m not published.” A more optimistic statement would be: “I love to write, but I’m not published…yet.”
Or, people who want to lose weight: “I’m not the weight I want to be.” –> “I’m not the weight I want to be…yet.”
“I’d love to do a marathon, but I can’t run that far.” –> “I’d love to do a marathon, but I can’t run that far…yet.”
You get the idea.
By adding “…yet” to self-limiting statements and beliefs, you’re shifting your “self-talk” from negative to positive and enabling yourself to manifest all the things you want in life. As Willie Nelson said, “Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones, you’ll start having positive results.”
What are some of your “…yet” statements?
Just got the bikes out and have started hitting the local bike paths again. We want to tackle the ride from Frenchtown to Lambertville, NJ, (32 miles round trip) so mine is:
“I can’t bike 32 miles…yet.”
I haven’t found my perfect career, yet.
Good one, Suzanne.
