Over the past few weeks, I’ve been talking about some fun new things I’ve got planned for Beyond the Gray in 2010. With the new year officially upon us I’m excited to introduce the Legends Book Club.
A few months ago, one of our dream chasers suggested that I start a virtual book club on Beyond the Gray. I immediately loved the idea but I was puzzled by two challenges: 1) how to get people to participate in a “virtual book club” and 2) how to run one.
I eventually came up with the concept of the Legends Book Club, which will be different than others you may be familiar with in that it will focus solely on exploring the lives of “legends.” These legends will come in many forms – from athletes and artists, to businesspeople, politicians, scientists and more – with the goal of understanding how they reached the top, the challenges and fears that stood in their way and how they overcame them. We’ll use these lessons and experiences to help guide us as we journey down the path towards our own dreams.
Here’s how it will work: At the beginning of each month I’ll announce the book we’ll be reading and the target pace. You can read along with me or simply tune in for the discussions. Throughout the month, I’ll be posting questions and topics for everyone to discuss. You can join in the conversation by posting your remarks in the comments section.
So, without further ado, I’m excited to announce January’s book:
Open: An Autobiography by Andre Agassi
Target reading pace: A chapter a day
Tune in tomorrow for our first discussion topic: making sure your dreams are your own.

I just started the book and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at how his story grabs your attention. I don’t read very much so this book is an excellent choice Erika to start out the Legends Book Club.
I won’t say much for those who may not have started but his childhood experiences, especially those with his dad, are beyond believable. I can’t believe his father was crazy enough to give him speed before a match. Wow!
Thanks for your feedback, Dave. Glad you’re reading along with us! I have to say, the speed thing really shocked me too. It just shows what lengths his father would go to have Andre succeed in tennis.
