Did you know that Labor Day first became a federal holiday back in 1894 when President Cleveland was trying to reconcile with the labor movement after a number of workers were killed by the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during a strike?
To be honest, until I Wikipedia-ed it, I had no idea.
For me – and I’m guessing for most people – Labor Day has always been just another awesome 3-day weekend, usually celebrated with a barbeque and followed by a massive reorganization of my closet.
I never stopped to ask why I get Monday off because, frankly, who cares? 3 days off – woohoo!
But really, when you think about it, Labor Day is a celebration of the social and economic achievements of you, me and all of our fellow American workers. It’s a tribute to the contributions we’re all making to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
So, whatever business you’re in, whatever work you do – cheers to you!
And enjoy your long weekend.
