Did you know that “The Father of Advertising” got his start selling stoves? Did you know that he worked as a chef, a researcher and a farmer before starting Ogilvy, Benson & Mather? Did you know that he had only $6,000 in his bank account when he started his advertising agency? When most people think of David Ogilvy, they think of a legend, a worldwide enterprise, a creative genius who shaped an entire industry, but what they forget is that, in the beginning, David Ogilvy was an everyday person like you and me; a dream chaser with a huge vision.
This month marks the 10th anniversivary of Ogilvy’s death and is the perfect time to remember his great contributions to advertising and honor the courageous act of chasing a dream. With that in mind, I wanted to share an old Scottish motto that Ogilvy claimed as one of his management principles:
“Be happy while you’re living, for you are a long time dead.”
