In Follow Your Dreams

The thing I love about the beginning of spring is the sense of change happening all around us. Right now the tree branches are still bare but their buds are ripe with promise. Daffodils are sprouting up, adding cheerful patches of sunshine to the bleak landscape, and the air smells earthy, like thawing ground and blades of grass waking up after a long winter’s nap. Everywhere you turn, the sense of renewal is palpable.

And I’m so thankful for it. I don’t about you, but this winter has been one of the hardest of my life. Yes, it was bitter cold here in Pennsylvania, and, yes, we got more snow this year than the last four years combined, but looking back on it, the hardest part hasn’t been the weather (although it certainly hasn’t helped), it’s been chasing my writing dream.

This is strange for me to think, let alone say out loud, because I LOVE writing (which is why I get up at 5am every morning to do it). But chasing a dream, any dream, is HARD work. Not only does it require enormous amounts of time and energy (which, let’s face it, are hard to come by), it demands a blind faith in yourself that at times seems irrational and downright silly.

For me, chasing my fiction writing dream has meant surviving on less sleep than I ever thought possible, working on the weekends, giving up time with my hubby, and pulling myself out of the occasional (okay, frequent) depths of despair.

So, yes, I am excited for spring. I am excited to wake up to sunshine and wear short sleeves. But most of all, I’m excited to see if any of my seeds of hard work come to life.

What are you looking forward to this spring?
